Chihuahuas/smooth or long?

I am thinking about getting a chi and i was wondering if i should get smooth or long coat and why? Is there a difference between them like in their personalities or anything? What are they ups and downs of having a chihuahua? Any information you might have about chis please tell me! Thanks!
